Recently a reader asked how to find the good deals at thrift stores. The only answer I have for that question is to look, and look, and look some more. As I’ve mentioned before, not all trips to the thrift store are successful.

I wore a dress to work today that I found at a thrift store. It’s an Ann Taylor Lycra knit black tank dress with white stripes around the bodice. A similar dress on www.anntaylor.com sells for $88. I got it at the thrift store for $7. I almost didn’t buy it because it’s a size smaller than I usually wear. It looked like it might fit, but I didn’t want to try it on. Plus, it’s Lycra, and Lycra doesn’t always play nice with my hips. The other thing that turned me off is that it’s dry clean only, and I try to stay away from dry clean only clothes. Too much maintenance.

Anyway, my fiancé talked me into giving the dress a shot. I’m glad I did, because it’s quickly becoming my favorite dress. I’ve worn it twice since I added it to my wardrobe, and I’ve gotten several compliments on it. It was one of those ‘good deals’ that everyone loves to find. I’ve been back to that particular store a few times since I found that dress, and haven’t had much luck finding anything. I’ll keep going every few weeks, and sooner or later, I’m sure I’ll come across another good deal.

PJ’s Coffee will be offering a free original 12 ounce Granita frozen coffee drink to their customers on this day. Available at participating locations. Limit one per customer.

The Granita is a specialty of PJ’s Coffee. It is a full-flavored, cold-roasted frozen coffee drink made with New Orleans roasted coffee. It is cold-roasted to preserve the flavor of the coffee beans.

PJ’s Coffee was started in 1978 by Phyllis Jordan in the University district of New Orleans. PJ’s Coffee of New Orleans now has 48 locations, primarily in the Southeast United States including locations in Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia, Texas, North Carolina, New Jersey and Florida. Father’s Day is this Sunday, June 15. Do you know what you’re getting your father, grandfather, or spouse this year?

Here are a couple of free offers that might help make things a little sweeter for Dad’s Day.

Recently my boyfriend asked me what I wanted to do for my birthday. Instead of buying each other gifts, we treat each other to a “day of ________”, where we each get to pick what we want to do for our birthdays. He’s a model railroader, so for his day, we went to a local train shop; he picked out a couple of cars he wanted, and I paid the bill.

So, when he asked me what I wanted for my day, I quickly responded with thrift store shopping. I hadn’t been for a while, so I was looking forward to finding lots of bargains. If you judge by the title of this post, you’ve probably figured out that my thrift store shopping trip was less than successful.

We went to three stores that I’ve had a lot of success at in the past before we gave up. Now, three stores isn’t a lot, but two of them are larger stores, and we spent a lot of time in each one. I looked at dresses, tops, skirts, knick knacks, books, shoes. There was a lot of merchandise, just nothing I was interested in. All we found the entire day was a Route 66 shot glass to add to our collection. We wound up spending the rest of the afternoon at my second “day of ______” choice; the bookstore, where I was much more successful.

While I was a bit let down, I wasn’t totally discouraged by my lack of success at the thrift stores. Because thrift stores add to their merchandise daily, they are adding to their stock constantly. So, just because I wasn’t successful this week, there’s a good chance I will be the next time I go in a couple of weeks.

Three major theater chains are providing cheap entertainment for kids this summer.

For ten weeks this summer, Cinemark will host the Summer Movie Clubhouse. One day during each of the ten weeks, the participating theaters will show one G or PG-rated movie for $1 per ticket. You can also purchase advance tickets for all ten movies for $5. Days, times and titles vary by theater.

On Tuesdays and Wednesdays starting Tuesday, June 24, the Regal Entertainment Group will be holding a Free Family Film Festival at their participating theaters. Titles vary by theater. All shows start at 10:00am and are on a first come, first served basis.

The AMC Summer Movie Camp will be held on Wednesdays at 10:00am from June 25 through August 6 at participating AMC Theaters. All tickets are $1 and will go to help the Variety Club Children’s Charity and the Will Rogers Institute. During the Summer Movie Camp, kids can also purchase an AMC Kids Pack for $3. The Kids Pack includes a kid-sized drink, popcorn and a snack. The snack can be upgraded to candy for $1 more.

National Donut Day is celebrated on the first Friday in June. That means it’s this Friday, June 6. National Donut Day was started by the Chicago Salvation Army in 1938 to raise funds during the depression.

To celebrate National Donut Day 2008, a couple of donut retailers are offering free donuts this Friday.

Krispy Kreme will give one free donut of the customer’s choice to every customer on Friday, June 6. The free donut is only available at Krispy Kreme retail stores. The offer is not good at outlets that carry Krispy Kreme donuts, such as convenience and grocery stores.

Lamar’s Donuts is offering a free donut to all military men and women in uniform on Friday.
